In 2008, Lokion implemented Adobe Scene7 Image Server technology within the Oracle ATG platform for the Viking Range ecommerce website in order to provide a richer user experience. We developed a product configurator that allows customers to change finishes, trim, and other options for key products. The product configurator options are based on a product’s attributes and provide a view of a product based on the customer’s selections. This product configurator uses statically defined images to display the customer’s chosen options.

In May 2012, Viking Range launched a new marquee product line, the D3 Series. This product series offers a fresh approach to Viking’s trademark performance by allowing individualism shine. Customers can completely customize knobs and handles for a unit that is uniquely theirs without sacrificing results. This created the perfect opportunity for Lokion to expand upon the site’s current implementation of Adobe’s Scene7 product by extending the Viking Range product configurator to support the colorization of D3 knobs and handles.
In order to more fully engage the user — whether a designer, a customer or a dreamer — to create and customize their D3 kitchen, key areas of the Viking Range website were enhanced:
- Product pages were updated to support the new customization options and the new salable required accessories for products.
- The visual product configurator on the product pages was enhanced to display the new customizable product options.
- New landing pages were created that could be used to promote Viking’s various brand identities.
To lay the foundation for these new features, Lokion enhanced the website’s product configurator to use Adobe Scene7 Dynamic Render Server. For each product, a vignette was created using Scene7 tools. A Scene7 vignette file provides the information needed to allow for dynamic modification of an image. By using this technology, the product configurator now displays the product image with the user’s selected options using a dynamically generated image. This approach provides more flexibility for displaying products and reduces the amount of content creation required vs using static images.
With the D3 Series launch, Viking Range continues their excellence in cooking and culinary products. And by using Scene7, Lokion provided our client with the support needed to best showcase their new product series.
